Questions and answers
Straight answers about HockeyOnline, the eGREP connection and game night at the rink.
The basics
What is HockeyOnline?
HockeyOnline is a live game report for ice hockey that runs in the browser. Scorekeeper, timekeeper, referee, announcer, the arena scoreboard and every screen in the building work on the same game, and the report is compatible with eGREP and hockeydata’s league server.
Who is HockeyOnline for?
For everyone involved in running a game: scorekeepers, timekeepers, referees, announcers, team and club managers, and the leagues and federations that receive the reports.
Where can we use HockeyOnline?
HockeyOnline starts in Germany and Austria, for clubs and leagues that report their games with eGREP and hockeydata’s league server, as in DEB and ÖEHV competitions. The team, club, screen and announcer features work for every club there, also for games that are reported on paper.
Is HockeyOnline available now?
HockeyOnline is in beta. We are rolling it out with the first clubs; talk to us if yours wants to be one of them, or try the demo right away.
What does HockeyOnline cost during the beta?
Nothing. HockeyOnline is free during the beta.
Can I try it without signing up?
Yes. The demo is the full app with a made-up league, without login, and nothing is stored on a server.
Do I need to install anything?
No. HockeyOnline runs in a current browser on iPad, Android, Windows and Mac. You can install it as an app if you like.
eGREP and the league server
Is HockeyOnline compatible with eGREP?
Yes. It writes the eGREP game report field by field, the original eGREP software reads its output unchanged, and its printouts follow eGREP’s templates.
Does it upload to the league server?
Yes, the same way eGREP does: live snapshots during the game and the final report at the end.
Is HockeyOnline made by hockeydata?
No. eGREP is a product of hockeydata GmbH. HockeyOnline is an independent app that works with eGREP and hockeydata’s league server.
At the rink
What happens if the arena Wi-Fi fails?
Nothing is lost. Every entry is saved on the device within a moment, you keep working, and the updates go out as soon as the connection is back.
Can the timekeeper, the referee and the announcer each use their own device?
Yes. Every role joins the same game on its own device in the shared game room, and everyone sees the same state at the same moment.
Can the arena scoreboard run on a normal TV?
Yes. Any screen with a browser, or with a small computer like a Raspberry Pi behind it, shows the full-screen scoreboard with clock, score and penalty clocks.
Does HockeyOnline read out announcements?
Yes. Every announcement is written ready to read, and an arena-style AI voice can call it in twelve languages. Listen to the samples on the announcer page.
Which languages does HockeyOnline speak?
The app speaks German, English, Italian, Dutch, Estonian, Swedish, Slovenian, Hungarian, Slovak and Polish. English follows IIHF terminology. This website is in English and German.
Screens and streams
Can our lobby screens show the live game?
Yes. HockeyOnline Screens shows the live home game with goals and play-by-play, plus your ice schedule, rosters and sponsor slides, on any screen with a Raspberry Pi or an old laptop.
Can we stream games with a score overlay?
Yes: a live overlay for club streams, as a browser overlay, an OBS browser source or burned in by the HockeyOnline Studio app, with watch pages on hockeyonline.tv.
Teams, families and clubs
Does HockeyOnline replace our team app?
It can: calendar with league games, attendance with deadlines, duties, carpools, news and lineups. Calendar feeds let both run side by side while you move over.
Can parents reply for their children?
Yes. Parents and guardians log in with their own accounts and answer for each child separately; children do not need accounts.
Is there an app for iPhone and Android?
Yes, in both app stores, with push notifications and smartwatch support. HockeyOnline also runs in any browser.
Can we run tournaments with it?
Yes: registration, groups and brackets, a schedule across your fields, live results, standings, a public page and the paper forms.
